Brahms Third Symphony

Listen to this famous movement by German composer Johannes Brahms. This week we will learn about the Romantic Period

By the way, this symphony inspired a song by mexican guitar player Carlos Santana. Is it the same melody?

The Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90, is a symphony by Johannes Brahms. The work was written in the summer of 1883 at Wiesbaden, nearly six years after he completed his Second Symphony. In the interim Brahms had written some of his greatest works, including the Violin Concerto, two overtures (Tragic Overture and Academic Festival Overture), and the Second Piano Concerto.

The premiere performance was given on 2 December 1883 by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Hans Richter. It is the shortest of Brahms' four symphonies; a typical performance lasts between 30 and 40 minutes.

  2. With the Third movement, which he finished in that summer of 1883, he wrote in many ways his most personal symphony. He may have chosen this town (Wiesbaden) in his work, influenced by landscape. There he found a high studio looking toward the river and got to work on his Third Symphony. He generally composed in the warm months and left the rest of the year for performing and copying out the summer's production.

Brahms was a guarded man, and most of the time he did not talk about the inspiration of a piece. In the same spirit, he destroyed most of his working sketches for pieces. He had, however, picked up from Robert Schumann the idea of symbolizing people in notes.

  3. The melody that plays Santana is, certainly, of Brahms.
